Thus he rest ored Yueyang Tower, enlarging its former structure, and had inscribed upon it th e poems and prose of worthy men of the Tang and of the present age. He entrusted me with the task of composing a record of it. I beheld the splendid scene of Baling—it lies in Lake Dongting. It holds distan t mountains in its embrace and swallows the long course of the Yangtze; vast and mighty, it stretches boundlessly to the horizon. Morning light and evening shad ows shift endlessly, presenting ten thousand changing aspects. Such is the grand spectacle of Yueyang Tower, already fully described by those who came before. Yet to the north it leads to Wuxia Gorge, and to the south reaches the rivers Xi ao and Xiang. Exiled officials and wandering poets often gather here. Might not their feelings, upon viewing such scenes, differ one from another? When the ceaseless rains fall, dim and drifting for months without clearing; whe n gloomy winds howl in fury and turbid waves surge skyward; when sun and stars h ide their radiance and mountains conceal their forms; when merchants and travele rs cannot proceed, masts collapse and oars are broken; when dusk descends in dee pening darkness, with tigers roaring and apes crying—ascending this tower, one is filled with longing for home, troubled by slander and fearful of reproach. But when spring is gentle and the day bright, the waters lie calm, reflecting th e light of sky above and below in an unbroken expanse of blue; sand-gulls soar a nd gather, brocaded fish swim and play; on the banks, angelica and orchids flour ish, lush and green. And sometimes, when drifting mist has wholly cleared and th e bright moon stretches a thousand li, shimmering light dances like gold upon th e water, while still reflections sink like jade. Fishermen’s songs answer one a nother—what joy could ever exhaust such delight? Ascending this tower, one feel s a heart unburdened and a spirit at ease, forgetting both favor and disgrace, r aising a cup to the breeze in quiet exultation. Ah! I have sought the hearts of the virtuous of old—perhaps they differ from bo th these states. Why is this so? They do not rejoice because of external things, nor do they grieve because of personal fortunes. When dwelling high in the cour t, they are concerned for the people; when removed to distant rivers and lakes, they are concerned for their ruler. Thus, whether advancing or retreating, they are ever anxious. Then when shall they find joy? Surely it is this: to be the first to worry for the world, and the last to delig ht in its joy. Alas!
